Grade 1 · Foundations of Language · Capitals and End Marks · Lesson 1
Start and Finish a Sentence
Sentences use special signals to tell readers where an idea starts and how it ends.
The big rule
Start with a capital. Finish with an end mark.
My dog can run.
Capital M starts the sentence. A period finishes it.
Three useful end marks
The meaning helps you choose
- Period
- Use a period when a sentence tells something. The sun is hot.
- Question mark
- Use a question mark when a sentence asks something. Is the sun hot?
- Exclamation mark
- Use an exclamation mark to show excitement or strong feeling. What a hot day!
