Start and Finish a Sentence

Sentences use special signals to tell readers where an idea starts and how it ends.

The big rule

Start with a capital. Finish with an end mark.

Three useful end marks

The meaning helps you choose

Period
Use a period when a sentence tells something. The sun is hot.
Question mark
Use a question mark when a sentence asks something. Is the sun hot?
Exclamation mark
Use an exclamation mark to show excitement or strong feeling. What a hot day!
