Grade 2 · Growth and Changes in Animals · Animal Growth and Change
Compare Animal Life Cycles
Every animal has a life cycle. Some young animals resemble adults, while others change their bodies and behaviour dramatically.

For students
Notice, predict, explain
Choose one part of the model. Predict how it connects to another part, then use the lesson evidence to explain your thinking.
For teachers
Pause for science talk
Show the model before the explanation. Ask “What do you notice?” and “What might change?” Then revisit student ideas after the worked example.
The big idea
Animals grow and change in different ways
A life cycle describes the repeating stages from the beginning of one generation to the beginning of the next.
Work it through
Frog and butterfly changes
- Step 1 A frog begins as an egg, becomes a tadpole, grows legs, and develops into an adult frog.
- Step 2 A butterfly begins as an egg, becomes a caterpillar, forms a chrysalis, and emerges as an adult.
- Step 3 Both cycles include eggs and adults, but the middle stages look and move differently.
- Step 4 Each stage has body parts and behaviours that help the animal survive in its environment.
