What Is Multiplication?

Multiplication is a way to describe equal groups. Let’s use pictures and addition to see how it works.

Multiplication uses equal groups

Equal groups have the same number of objects in every group. The equation 3 × 4 means there are 3 groups with 4 objects in each group.

Worked example

Solve 3 × 4

  1. 1. Count the groups: 3 groups.
  2. 2. Count each group: 4 in every group.
  3. 3. Write repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4.
  4. 4. Add: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

3 × 4 = 12
