Grade 4 · Number · Lesson 2
Divide Larger Numbers
Split a dividend into friendly parts and use multiplication to check the quotient.
Worked example
Solve 156 ÷ 3
- 1. Split 156: 150 + 6
- 2. Divide each part: 150 ÷ 3 = 50 and 6 ÷ 3 = 2
- 3. Combine and check: 50 + 2 = 52, and 52 × 3 = 156
156 ÷ 3 = 52
When something remains
Share the remainder when the context allows it
If 98 metres of ribbon is shared equally among 4 groups, each group gets 24 metres with 2 metres left. The 2 remaining metres can be shared as quarters: 2 ÷ 4 = 2/4 = 1/2.
98 ÷ 4 = 24 1/2
