Use place value to turn one large multiplication problem into smaller facts you know.
Worked example
Solve 132 × 4
- 1. Decompose: 132 = 100 + 30 + 2
- 2. Multiply each part: 100 × 4 = 400, 30 × 4 = 120, and 2 × 4 = 8
- 3. Combine: 400 + 120 + 8 = 528
132 × 4 = 528
Multiply by powers of ten
The value grows by groups of ten
- 24 × 10
- 240
- 24 × 100
