Grade 5 · Composition: Expressing Ideas and Creating Texts · Draft, Revise, and Publish
Revise for Readers
Revision improves ideas and organization; editing improves correctness. Strong writers do both in that order.
The big idea
Revision is re-seeing, not just fixing spelling
A writer may add evidence, delete repetition, change word choice, or move a sentence so the message becomes clearer for the intended audience.
Work it through
Use a focused revision pass
- 1. Read once for purpose: does the draft deliver the intended message?
- 2. Revise content and order: add, delete, or move sentences.
- 3. Edit spelling, punctuation, grammar, and format.
- 4. Choose a publishing medium and explain how it helps communicate the message.
