Research is not copying facts. It is a deliberate process of asking, checking, recording, and organizing information for readers.

The big idea

Purpose determines which information belongs

A question such as 'How can our school reduce food waste?' guides the sources, notes, categories, and final text form a writer chooses.

Work it through

1. Name the audience and what they need to understand.
2. Gather information from multiple textual sources.
3. Check author, date, evidence, and purpose using simple reliability criteria.
4. Record the creator and source, then group notes by subtopic instead of by website.
