Point of view controls what readers can know directly. Inference helps readers combine text evidence with careful reasoning.
The big idea
A narrator is a window, not the whole world
A first-person narrator can share private thoughts but may misunderstand another character. Third person may offer a wider view but can still focus on one perspective.
Work it through
Infer from actions and narration
- 1. Identify who tells the story and which pronouns are used.
- 2. Collect explicit details: what the narrator states directly.
- 3. Notice implicit clues in actions, dialogue, and omissions.
- 4. State an inference and support it with more than one clue.
