Connect Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
Fractions, decimals, and percents can name the same amount. Each form is useful in a different situation.
The big idea
Equivalent forms share one location on the number line
Three quarters, 0.75, and 75% all describe 75 out of 100 equal parts. Changing the notation does not change the amount.
Work it through
Show that 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%
- 1. Rename fourths as hundredths: 3/4 = 75/100.
- 2. Write 75 hundredths as a decimal: 0.75.
- 3. Percent means out of 100, so 75/100 = 75%.
