Multiply and Divide with Area Models
An area model keeps place value visible while larger multiplication and division calculations are built.
The big idea
Break numbers apart without changing their value
For 24 × 36, partition 24 into 20 + 4 and 36 into 30 + 6. The four smaller rectangles show every partial product.
Work it through
Solve 24 × 36
- 1. 20 × 30 = 600 and 20 × 6 = 120.
- 2. 4 × 30 = 120 and 4 × 6 = 24.
- 3. Add the partial products: 600 + 120 + 120 + 24 = 864.
- 4. Check division with the inverse relationship: 864 ÷ 24 = 36.
