Ratios compare quantities multiplicatively. Rates compare quantities with different units, such as kilometres per hour.
The big idea
Equivalent ratios scale together
If blue and red tiles are in a 2:3 ratio, multiplying both parts by 5 gives the equivalent ratio 10:15.
Work it through
Find a unit rate for 18 km in 3 hours
- 1. Write the rate: 18 km per 3 h.
- 2. Divide both quantities by 3.
- 3. The unit rate is 6 km per 1 h, or 6 km/h.
- 4. Use the unit rate to predict 30 km in 5 hours.
