Relative position and motion create patterns we observe
Earth's rotation and orbit, the Moon's orbit, reflected sunlight, and gravity combine to produce regular patterns such as day and night, moon phases, seasons, and eclipses.

Explain the Moon's changing appearance
- Step 1 The Sun illuminates half of the Moon at all times, except during a lunar eclipse.
- Step 2 As the Moon orbits Earth, our viewing angle toward its illuminated half changes.
- Step 3 The visible illuminated portion follows a repeating sequence of phases; Earth's shadow does not cause the ordinary phases.
- Step 4 A scale model can show relative positions, but its size and distance limits must be stated clearly.
