A strong interpretation accounts for repeated details, literary devices, perspective, and context rather than relying on one isolated quotation.

Interpretations synthesize patterns of evidence

A recurring object may function as a symbol, but the interpretation becomes convincing only when its appearances, changes, and surrounding language support the same idea.

Work it through

Test a possible symbol

1. Identify the object or image and where it recurs.
2. Record explicit details and infer possible associations.
3. Compare how different characters or perspectives respond to it.
4. Form a conclusion that acknowledges evidence, context, and any reasonable alternative.
