Connect Patterns and Algebra

Algebra describes relationships that hold for many values. Like terms can combine because they count the same variable unit.

The big idea

Rate, initial value, and constraint play different roles

In y = 5x + 8, 5 is the constant rate and 8 is the initial value. In 5x + 8 ≤ 33, the inequality adds a constraint on possible x-values.

Work it through

Solve 3x + 2x < 20

  1. 1. Combine like terms: 3x + 2x = 5x.
  2. 2. Solve 5x < 20 by dividing both sides by 5.
  3. 3. The solution is x < 4.
  4. 4. Graph an open circle at 4 and shade values to the left.
