  1. Which number is greatest?

    Answer: −0.6

Among negative numbers, the value closest to zero is greatest. −0.6 is greater than about −0.667 and −0.7.

  2. A temperature is −4°C and drops 7°C. What is the new temperature?

    Answer: −11°C

    A drop of 7 is represented by adding −7: −4 + (−7) = −11.

  3. Evaluate 6 − (−9).

    Answer: 15

    Subtracting a negative reverses direction, so 6 − (−9) = 6 + 9 = 15.
