  1. For y = −3x + 8, what are the rate and initial value?

    Answer: rate −3, initial 8

In y = mx + b, m is the rate and b is the initial value.

  2. Simplify 7m + (−3m + 5).

    Answer: 4m + 5

    Combine the like variable terms: 7m − 3m = 4m. The constant remains 5.

  3. Solve −2x > 10.

    Answer: x < −5

Divide by −2 and reverse the inequality sign: x < −5.
