The big idea
Fluid pressure can transfer force through a system
Pascal's law connects force and piston area. A larger output force is possible at a larger piston, while conservation principles mean the output piston moves a shorter distance than the input piston.

Compare two connected pistons
- Step 1 A force on the small input piston creates pressure in the nearly incompressible liquid.
- Step 2 That pressure is transmitted in all directions through the confined fluid.
- Step 3 The same pressure acting over a larger output-piston area produces a larger output force.
- Step 4 Leaks, friction, fluid viscosity, trapped gas, temperature, and component strength affect the real system's safety and efficiency.
