Build and Count a Collection
A number can be shown with objects, fingers, marks, words, and numerals. Moving real objects helps us see how quantities work.
Keep it simple
What you need
- Up to 20 small objects
- Two small bowls or plates
- Number cards or paper
Play and explore
Try it together
- 1 Choose a number from 1 to 20 and build a collection with that many objects.
- 2 Touch or move each object while counting to check the total.
- 3 Split the collection between two bowls and count each part.
- 4 Put the parts back together and write or point to the numeral for the whole collection.
Follow the child’s thinking
Talk about it
- How do you know you counted every object once?
- What two parts did you make?
- Would the total change if you moved the objects around?
