Go on a Sound Hunt

Words are full of sounds. We can listen closely, find a beginning sound, and match it to a letter.

Keep it simple

What you need

  • A few familiar objects
  • Paper
  • A crayon or marker

Play and explore

Try it together

  1. 1 Choose a sound, such as /m/, and say it slowly together.
  2. 2 Look around for objects whose names begin with that sound.
  3. 3 Say each object name and stretch its beginning sound.
  4. 4 Write the matching uppercase and lowercase letter, then draw one object beside it.

Follow the child’s thinking

Talk about it

  • What sound do you hear at the beginning?
  • Can you think of another word that starts the same way?
  • Which letter represents that sound?
