Take Turns Together

Playing together can bring different ideas and strong feelings. We can notice those feelings and use a fair plan.

Keep it simple

What you need

  • One favourite toy or shared material
  • A timer, song, or turn card

Play and explore

Try it together

  1. 1 Name how each person might feel when both want the same material.
  2. 2 Choose a fair turn-taking signal, such as a short song or turn card.
  3. 3 Practise asking for a turn and responding kindly.
  4. 4 After both turns, decide whether the plan worked or needs a change.

Follow the child’s thinking

Talk about it

  • How can you tell what someone else may be feeling?
  • What words can you use to ask for a turn?
  • What could you try if the first plan does not feel fair?
