Interactive Plant Life Cycle

Follow one flowering plant through five life-cycle stages.

All 5 steps

Completed stages stay visible so you can see how the cycle develops.

  1. Stage 1 · Seed

A seed protects a tiny new plant and stores food that helps it begin growing.

  2. Stage 2 · Germination

With suitable water and heat, the seed opens. A root grows downward and a shoot begins growing upward.

  3. Stage 3 · Seedling

The young seedling grows leaves that capture light. Its root system continues spreading through the soil.

  4. Stage 4 · Mature plant

The mature plant has developed roots, stems, and leaves. It can grow flowers and reproduce.

  5. Stage 5 · Flower and new seeds

Flowers help the plant make new seeds. Those seeds can begin the life cycle again.
